Reiki

What is Reiki? Reiki is a Japanese healing art that aids the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Divided, the word Rei (pronounced “Ray”) translated means spiritual, Universal or Divine.

Ki (pronounced “key”) means energy or life force energy. Ki is the energy of everything, including the earth and heavens, all living things, humans, the entire universe. Combined, Reiki means spiritually or Divinely guided life force energy.

Variations of Reiki are believed to have been used and taught in Tibet thousands of years ago, in ancient Egypt as well as in the ancient civilizations of Atlantis and Lemuria.

In the late 1800’s, a Japanese man named Mikao Usui is accredited to rediscovering the Reiki system of natural healing. The ability of Reiki is passed down from Master to student. The concept behind Reiki is to balance one’s life force energy, also known as the Ki, Chi and Prana.

Each of us has an energy field around our body as well as different energy centers in the body, called the Chakras. The word Chakra is sanskrit for "wheel."

Our thoughts and emotions are also forms of energy. Though they are not visible to the naked eye, they are powerful. Our spiritual, emotional, mental and physical health are all dependent on the health of these subtle energetic bodies. When we become angry, fearful, sad, stressed or overworked, the Chakras can become blocked or stop spinning correctly, causing us to feel "off" and out of balance, tired, sick or other ailments.

Think of our life force energy similar to that of a flowing river. If there are some big rocks, logs or other blocks in the river (caused by negative emotions and other factors) this makes it difficult for the river to flow efficiently and smoothly. Sometimes, water can back-up in places or remain stagnant. When our life force energy flow becomes stagnant or out of balance, we may feel any number of physical, mental, emotional or spiritual ailments. Reiki opens up and balances our life force energy, promoting healing and wellness. Reiki allows one to feel peaceful, relaxed and healthy and also aids in stress reduction.

Reiki is spiritual in nature rather than religious. There is no dogma in Reiki and it is not dependent upon one’s own beliefs, intellectual capacity or spiritual development to receive a Reiki treatment. Reiki truly is for everyone and can benefit all, including animals and living things. It can be done in person or from a distance, which is just as powerful and works much in the same way as prayer does. Because energy is everywhere and we are all connected in spirit, it doesn't matter where someone is located to have Reiki.
